The Science of Breathwork

Every emotional state has a corresponding breathing pattern.


When we’re anxious, our breath becomes shallow and rapid.


When we’re peaceful, it flows deep and slow.


Science tells us that each breath we take directly influences our autonomic nervous system, the control centre for our stress and relaxation responses.


But here’s the remarkable part: this relationship works both ways.By consciously changing how we breathe, we can directly influence our mental and emotional state. For example, when we slow our breath to about six breaths per minute, our heart rate synchronises with our breath in a phenomenon called heart rate variability coherence, promoting emotional balance and mental clarity.


Meanwhile, slow, deep breathing will stimulate the vagus nerve, our body’s relaxation pathway, and specific rhythmic breathing can increase alpha brain waves associated with creativity and focus.


The benefits to both our emotional and physical health can be dramatic: research tells us that just two minutes of slow breathing can lower blood pressure and reduce levels of cortisol, our primary stress hormone.
